A major fire at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), is suspected to have been triggered by a sliding gate failure, according to preliminary findings. The incident, which occurred on June 8, 2026, has prompted a thorough investigation into both the equipment malfunction and the quality of raw materials used in the plant.
Sliding Gate Failure Under Scrutiny
Initial assessments indicate that a malfunctioning sliding gate in the steelmaking section may have caused a sudden release of molten metal, leading to the blaze. The sliding gate is a critical component used to control the flow of molten steel from ladles. Its failure could have catastrophic consequences, as seen in this incident.
Raw Material Quality Questioned
Alongside the mechanical failure, investigators are examining the quality of raw materials supplied to the plant. Substandard inputs could have contributed to the accident by increasing the likelihood of blockages or abnormal reactions in the furnace. RINL has formed an internal team to review procurement and quality control processes.
External Inquiry Committee Appointed
In addition to RINL's internal investigation, a three-member external inquiry committee has been constituted to probe the incident. The committee is led by the Director-in-Charge of the Steel Authority of India Limited's (SAIL) Bokaro plant. This external oversight aims to ensure an impartial and comprehensive analysis of the events leading to the fire.
Safety Protocols Under Review
The accident has raised concerns about safety protocols at the Vizag plant. RINL has announced a temporary suspension of operations in the affected area until the investigation is complete. Company officials have assured that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, was brought under control after several hours of effort by plant fire brigades and local fire services. No casualties have been reported, but the incident caused significant damage to equipment and halted production in the affected unit.
RINL is one of India's leading steel producers, and the Vizag plant is a key asset in the country's public sector steel industry. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and safety regulators.
