The city of Jhansi continues to experience intense heat as temperatures rise day by day. On Sunday, Jhansi along with Orai in the Bundelkhand region recorded 45.6 degrees Celsius, making it the ninth hottest location in the state. Meanwhile, Banda clocked 46.8 degrees Celsius, becoming the second hottest in the state. Jhansi also recorded the highest night temperature in the state at 30.8 degrees Celsius.
Temperature Forecast
Agro-Meteorology scientist Aditya Singh has predicted that temperatures may further increase, potentially reaching 47 degrees Celsius in the next couple of days. He also forecasted a slight relief for a few days starting Wednesday due to the influence of a rising western disturbance.
Impact on Daily Life
The scorching heat is affecting the entire city, especially those who spend the entire day outdoors. Labourers are the most affected. Many contractors have shifted work timings to start as early as 5 AM and end at 11 AM. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days as the traditional 'Nau Tapa'—the nine hottest days in the Bundelkhand region—begins on Monday. These days are considered the most notoriously hot in the region.
Power Cuts Add to Woes
Adding to the misery, rampant and prolonged load shedding, especially during nights, is leading to sleepless nights. People from marginalized communities living in small houses with minimal ventilation in the old city area, where power cuts are most frequent, are facing serious health issues. Despite strict measures by the local administration, the electricity department has been unable to control the situation.
Sunita Verma, a school peon whose husband is a daily wager, said, "After a daylong of work, the nights are becoming unbearable without electricity. My daughter fell sick twice, which is affecting her studies. Our whole family is facing a lack of sleep, and we are helpless."
Environmental Concerns
Environmentalists point to rampant mining and felling of trees in the name of development as major reasons for the prevailing heat conditions, pushing the region towards becoming a heat island.
