Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah, on Tuesday to discuss the evolving security situation in West Asia amid rising regional tensions.
Discussion on Regional Security
During the call, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the developments and reiterated India's firm stance in favor of de-escalation and diplomacy. According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release, the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving security situation in West Asia. The discussion highlighted India's continued engagement with key Gulf partners on regional security issues.
India's Position on Kuwait's Sovereignty
The MEA stated that PM Modi reaffirmed India's strong condemnation of attacks on Kuwait's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy to restore peace and stability at the earliest.
Welfare of Indian Nationals in Kuwait
The welfare of the large Indian community in Kuwait was a prominent topic. PM Modi thanked the Emir for his personal attention to the well-being and safety of Indians residing in the Gulf nation. The MEA release noted that PM Modi expressed appreciation for the Emir's efforts in ensuring the security of Indian nationals.
Context of the Conversation
The conversation comes days after India condemned an attack on Kuwait International Airport, which resulted in the death of an Indian national and injuries to several others. On June 3, the MEA reiterated that civilian populations and infrastructure must not be targeted, expressed condolences to the victim's family, and stated that Indian missions across the region remain on alert, extending assistance to affected nationals and monitoring the situation closely.
