US Senator Marco Rubio held delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting underscored the growing importance of the India-US strategic partnership, which both sides described as critical for regional and global stability.
Delegation-Level Talks Focus on Key Issues
The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including defense cooperation, trade, technology, and counterterrorism. Rubio, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, praised India's role as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to deepening ties with the United States under the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership framework.
Strategic Partnership Hailed as Critical
Speaking after the meeting, Rubio said, "The India-US strategic partnership is more critical now than ever before. We are aligned on many global challenges, from ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific to combating terrorism." Jaishankar echoed these sentiments, noting that the partnership has expanded significantly in recent years, with increased cooperation in defense, space, and cybersecurity.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
- Both sides agreed to enhance defense collaboration through joint exercises and technology sharing.
- Discussions on boosting trade and investment, with a focus on critical and emerging technologies.
- Commitment to work together on counterterrorism and intelligence sharing.
- Exploration of new avenues in space exploration and cybersecurity.
The meeting also touched upon regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and the South China Sea. Both leaders emphasized the need for a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region, free from coercion and intimidation.
India-US Relations: A Growing Partnership
The talks come ahead of the upcoming Quad summit and the India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue. The strategic partnership between India and the US has deepened over the past decade, with both countries signing several foundational agreements, including the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA), the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), and the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA).
In recent years, defense trade between the two nations has crossed $20 billion. The US has become one of India's top defense suppliers, with platforms like the C-17 Globemaster, P-8I Poseidon, and Apache helicopters being inducted into the Indian armed forces. Additionally, joint military exercises such as Yudh Abhyas, Malabar, and Cope India have enhanced interoperability between the two militaries.
Technology and Trade Cooperation
The talks also explored ways to strengthen technology cooperation, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and 5G telecommunications. Both sides recognized the potential for collaboration in the Indo-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), which was launched during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington last year.
On the trade front, the two countries are working towards a bilateral trade agreement to address tariff and non-tariff barriers. The US is India's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods and services exceeding $150 billion in 2023.
The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of India-US relations. Jaishankar invited Rubio to visit India again, while Rubio extended an invitation to Jaishankar for further discussions in Washington.
