Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi has taken serious note of the slow pace of road re-carpeting works across the city, which have been hampered by a severe shortage of bitumen in the market. On Tuesday, he convened an emergency review meeting with the engineering wing of the Municipal Corporation and representatives of the agencies executing the projects.

Chief Engineer Sanjay Arora, Superintending Engineer (B&R) Dharmender Sharma, and other concerned officers attended the meeting. During the review, contractors informed the Mayor that the non-availability of bitumen has disrupted the supply chain, causing significant delays in several ongoing projects.
Mayor's Directives
Mayor Joshi directed the contractors and officials to explore all possible alternatives for procuring bitumen to ensure uninterrupted execution of works. He emphasized that supply-related constraints should not lead to prolonged inconvenience for the public. The engineering wing has been instructed to closely monitor bitumen availability and maintain constant coordination with contractors to remove bottlenecks and expedite pending works.
Regular progress reports must be submitted to ensure effective monitoring and timely completion of projects. "The residents of Chandigarh should not suffer due to supply-related challenges. All concerned agencies must work in close coordination and make every possible effort to accelerate the pace of road re-carpeting works. Public convenience and quality infrastructure remain our top priorities," said the Mayor.
Additional Measures
Joshi also directed contractors to mobilize additional resources wherever required to compensate for the delays caused by the bitumen shortage. He reaffirmed the Municipal Corporation's commitment to strengthening Chandigarh's road infrastructure and ensuring timely completion of development works to provide better civic amenities to residents.
