Shimla: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 246-crore underground utility duct project in Shimla, aimed at modernising the city's infrastructure, improving urban aesthetics and ensuring better public convenience.
Project Details
The project will create an integrated underground utility duct network along key stretches, including Chotta Shimla-Willy Park-Chaura Maidan, Lok Bhavan-Oak Over and Sher-e-Punjab-CTO Chowk via Lower Bazar.
Chief Minister's Remarks
Describing the initiative as a major step towards transforming the capital city, Sukhu said overhead cables are being shifted underground to improve Shimla's visual appeal and offer a better experience to residents and tourists. He added that the project would strengthen urban infrastructure while preserving the city's heritage character and scenic beauty.
Sukhu also said the underground network would simplify maintenance of essential services and help ensure uninterrupted electricity and telecommunications connectivity, particularly during snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
Government's Commitment
Addressing the gathering, Sukhu said the state government is committed to developing modern, sustainable and citizen-friendly urban infrastructure. This project is expected to reduce visual clutter, enhance safety, and improve the reliability of utility services, contributing to Shimla's overall development as a smart city.
