A woman in Meerut has been arrested for allegedly strangling her infant son and attempting to pass off the murder as a death due to illness. The incident came to light after the child's father, Amit, who was away from home at the time of the death, received information that the baby had been unwell before his death. Suspicious of the circumstances, he alerted the police.
Investigation Details
According to police officials, the accused woman initially claimed that her three-month-old son had died due to a sudden illness. However, a post-mortem examination revealed that the child had been strangled. The police then interrogated the mother, who allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning.
Motive Behind the Act
Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman may have been under severe mental stress, though the exact motive remains unclear. Authorities are also looking into whether there was any history of domestic discord or postpartum depression.
The husband, Amit, a daily wage laborer, had returned home after receiving news of his son's death. He told reporters that he found inconsistencies in his wife's account of events. "She said the baby was fine when I left, but then suddenly died. I felt something was wrong," he said.
Legal Proceedings
The woman has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder. She is currently in judicial custody and will be produced before a local court. The child's body has been handed over to the family after the autopsy.
This tragic incident has shocked the local community in Meerut, with neighbors expressing disbelief. "They seemed like a normal family. We never expected something like this," said a neighbor.
Police have urged the public not to jump to conclusions and assured that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover all facts.
