In a tragic incident in Mumbai, a 34-year-old labourer died after being electrocuted at an under-construction building site in Goregaon. The police have registered an FIR against the contractor, T Padi, for negligence.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Hasnujuman Hussain, was a native of West Bengal. He was assigned the task of lift pit breaking and core cutting at the site using a machine. According to police, Hussain had not received any technical training in the operation of the machine, and no safety equipment was provided by the contractor.
On May 16, while using the machine, Hussain suffered a severe electric shock. He was rushed to a private hospital in Goregaon and later transferred to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari, where doctors declared him dead.
Investigation Findings
During the probe, police visited the site and made inquiries. They discovered that the contractor had received a work order from an infrastructure company to break the temporary concrete foundation in the lift duct. The work order explicitly stated that the contractor would provide workers with safety harnesses, safety shoes, helmets, and other protective gear. It also held the contractor responsible for any injuries to workers.
When police examined the site, they found that the extension board provided to Hussain was damaged, and the core cutting machine he was using had exposed wires. These conditions directly contributed to the fatal electrocution.
Legal Action
Based on the findings, the police registered an FIR against contractor T Padi for negligence. The case highlights the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols at construction sites to prevent such tragedies.
