Rajkot Acid Attack on Stray Bulls: Two Women Arrested for Animal Cruelty
In a shocking case of animal cruelty, two women have been arrested in the Lodhika taluka of Rajkot district for allegedly attacking eight to ten stray bulls with acid. The women reportedly claimed that "the bulls were harassing their cows," leading to this brutal act.
Incident Details and Police Complaint
The alleged acid attack occurred on March 29 near Gate 2 of the Metoda GIDC industrial estate. A formal police complaint was filed on Tuesday at the Metoda GIDC police station by Ravi Mori, an 18-year-old CNC operator who also volunteers with an animal welfare organization.
According to Mori's complaint, he discovered that stray bulls on a street near Diamond Park Society had suffered severe acid burns. Upon investigation, the names of Deepa Rathod and Shobhna Udesha, residents of Shrinathji Park Society, emerged as the alleged perpetrators.
Police Confirmation and Motive
DySP K G Zala of the Gondal division confirmed the arrests and elaborated on the motive behind the act. Speaking to mediapersons, he stated that both accused women, who keep cattle at their homes, admitted to pouring acid on the bulls out of frustration. The women told police that the bulls were "harassing their cows."
Police sources revealed that the accused are sisters-in-law and that both families are engaged in animal husbandry. This background adds a layer of complexity to the case, highlighting tensions within local livestock management.
Legal Action and Treatment of Injured Animals
Authorities have registered a case against the women under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 325 (mischief by maiming animal) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. These charges underscore the serious nature of the offense and the legal repercussions for such acts of animal cruelty.
The injured bulls are currently undergoing medical treatment. Animal welfare groups are closely monitoring their recovery, emphasizing the need for proper care and rehabilitation following such traumatic incidents.
Community Outrage and Broader Implications
This incident has sparked significant outrage among animal welfare activists and the local community. Activists are calling for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws and increased awareness about humane ways to address conflicts between domestic and stray animals.
The case raises important questions about:
- Effective management of stray animal populations in urban and industrial areas.
- Community education on non-violent conflict resolution with wildlife.
- The role of law enforcement in preventing and prosecuting animal cruelty cases.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for compassion and legal accountability in interactions with animals, whether domestic or stray.
