Primary School Teacher in Murshidabad Arrested for Firing Airgun at Children
In a shocking incident in Murshidabad, a primary school teacher was arrested after he allegedly fired pellets from an airgun at children playing near his residence, resulting in injuries to one child. The event took place in Banipur under the jurisdiction of the Raghunathganj police station on Friday, sparking outrage among local residents.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
The arrested individual has been identified as Samir Kumar Mondal, who serves as a teacher at Omarpur Primary School. According to local accounts, approximately 10 to 12 children from the neighborhood regularly play in front of Mondal's house in Banipur. The ball used in their games often lands inside his property, which had reportedly been a source of annoyance for him. Locals stated that Mondal had previously warned the children against playing in that area.
On Friday, witnesses reported that the children were engaged in play when the ball accidentally struck Mondal's door. Allegedly, this triggered a fit of rage in Mondal, who then retrieved an airgun and fired four to five rounds in an attempt to frighten the children. As the youngsters fled in panic, one pellet struck a child's hand, causing injury.
Response from the Victim's Family and Authorities
The father of the injured child, Biswajit Saha, expressed his dismay, questioning the justification for such an extreme reaction. "The children were simply playing, and the ball just hit his door. Does that justify shooting at children? My son was hit and is now in the hospital," he said. The child was promptly taken to Jangipur sub-divisional hospital for medical treatment.
Police officers from the Raghunathganj station swiftly responded to the incident, arresting Mondal from his residence and seizing the airgun. Authorities have indicated that forensic testing may be conducted to confirm the exact type of weapon used in the attack.
Teacher's Admission and Community Impact
During interrogation, Mondal admitted to his actions but claimed he had no intention of causing harm. "I fired only to scare them. I didn't realise it would hit someone," he stated. This incident has raised serious concerns about safety and the behavior of educators in the community, highlighting the need for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
