The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Veena T, the daughter of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in connection with a money laundering probe. The case is linked to the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project, a state government initiative aimed at providing high-speed internet connectivity.
Background of the Case
The ED's investigation stems from allegations of irregularities in the implementation of the K-FON project. The project, launched in 2019, was designed to bridge the digital divide in Kerala by offering affordable internet access to all citizens. However, it has been mired in controversy, with opposition parties accusing the state government of corruption and favoritism in awarding contracts.
Veena T, who is a director in a private company that was allegedly involved in the project, has been asked to appear before the ED for questioning. The agency is probing whether there was any illegal transfer of funds or money laundering related to the project.
Political Reactions
The summoning of the Chief Minister's daughter has triggered a political storm in Kerala. The opposition Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have demanded a thorough investigation, alleging that the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) is protecting its own. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has defended Veena T, stating that she is being targeted for political vendetta.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has not yet commented on the issue. However, his party has issued a statement asserting that the ED's action is part of a central government conspiracy to harass opposition leaders.
Legal Proceedings
Veena T has been given a specific date to appear before the ED's Kochi office. Legal experts suggest that she may seek anticipatory bail if she fears arrest. The ED has the power to arrest individuals under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) if they are found to be evading summons or not cooperating.
The case has also raised questions about the involvement of private entities in government projects. The K-FON project was implemented through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) called Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL), which had private partners.
What is the K-FON Project?
K-FON aims to provide free internet connectivity to 20 lakh below-poverty-line families in Kerala and affordable internet to others. The project was supposed to be completed by 2021 but has faced multiple delays. The ED is investigating whether there were financial irregularities in the procurement of equipment and the selection of vendors.
The probe is also looking into allegations that funds meant for the project were diverted to private accounts. So far, the ED has conducted raids at several locations in Kerala and questioned multiple officials.
The summoning of Veena T marks a significant escalation in the investigation. It remains to be seen how the legal and political landscape will evolve in the coming days.
