The Congress party on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Modi government over its decision to reduce the number of subsidised LPG cylinder refills per year. The party accused the government of being 'intoxicated by power' and failing to address the concerns of the common people.
Reduction in subsidised cylinders
The government recently announced a reduction in the number of subsidised LPG cylinder refills from 12 to 9 per household per year. This move, according to the Congress, will put an additional financial burden on families, especially those from lower-income groups. The party claimed that the decision reflects the government's disregard for the welfare of the poor.
Congress's reaction
Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, 'The Modi government is intoxicated by power and has no concern for the common man. Reducing subsidised LPG cylinders will directly impact millions of households who rely on this essential fuel for cooking.' He further alleged that the government is prioritising corporate interests over public welfare.
The opposition party has demanded an immediate rollback of the decision and urged the government to reconsider its policy on LPG subsidies. The Congress also questioned the timing of the reduction, coming ahead of the festive season when demand for LPG typically rises.
Government's justification
In response, government officials defended the move, stating that it is aimed at rationalising subsidies and ensuring that benefits reach the truly needy. They argued that the reduction would help in curbing wastage and promoting the use of cleaner fuels. However, the Congress dismissed these arguments as 'excuses' and called for a detailed explanation.
The issue has sparked a political debate, with opposition parties likely to use it as a rallying point against the government in upcoming elections. The Congress has vowed to raise the matter in Parliament and across the country.
