ED Searches Targeted Attack on Opposition: Vijayan

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday accused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of conducting searches as part of a targeted attack on opposition leaders. He alleged that the central agency was being misused by the central government to harass political rivals.

ED Raids in Kerala

The ED conducted searches at multiple locations in Kerala, including the residence of a former minister and other prominent figures linked to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). The searches were part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities.

Vijayan's Reaction

Speaking to reporters, Vijayan said, "The ED searches are a clear example of how central agencies are being weaponized against opposition parties. This is a targeted attack on leaders who stand against the policies of the central government." He further added that such actions undermine federal principles and democratic norms.

The Chief Minister also questioned the timing of the raids, noting that they come ahead of crucial elections in the state. He demanded that the central government stop using investigative agencies for political vendetta.

Opposition's Stand

Leaders from various opposition parties have rallied behind Vijayan, expressing solidarity and condemning the ED's actions. They argue that the central government is systematically targeting non-BJP leaders to weaken the opposition.

The ED, however, maintained that its actions are based on evidence and are part of a legitimate probe into money laundering cases. Officials stated that searches were conducted following specific leads and that due process was followed.

Meanwhile, political analysts view this as a growing trend where central agencies are increasingly seen as tools to settle political scores. The debate over the autonomy of institutions like the ED and CBI continues to intensify, with opposition parties calling for reforms to ensure their independence.
