West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday cried foul over the recently declared assembly election results in the state, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of rigging the polls and orchestrating a series of violent incidents. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee expressed outrage over the demolition of a sculpture at the Salt Lake Stadium, which she claimed was a symbol of Bengali pride. She also alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) offices were looted and women party workers were assaulted by BJP supporters following the results.
Allegations of Poll Rigging
Banerjee asserted that the election results did not reflect the true mandate of the people of West Bengal. She claimed that the BJP, with the help of central agencies, manipulated the electoral process to secure an unfair advantage. "The people of Bengal have been cheated. This is not a victory of democracy but a defeat of the people's will," she said.
Demolition of Salt Lake Stadium Sculpture
The chief minister specifically condemned the demolition of a large sculpture at the Salt Lake Stadium, which she described as a masterpiece representing the cultural heritage of Bengal. She accused the BJP of targeting symbols of Bengali identity. "They are trying to destroy our culture and heritage. This is an attack on the soul of Bengal," Banerjee stated.
Attacks on TMC Offices and Women
Banerjee also highlighted reports of TMC offices being vandalized and looted in several districts. She alleged that women party workers were subjected to assault and intimidation by BJP cadres. "Our offices are being ransacked, and our women workers are being harassed. This is the face of the BJP's so-called development agenda," she remarked.
Demand for Central Intervention
Calling for immediate intervention by the central government, Banerjee urged President Droupadi Murmu to ensure the safety of TMC workers and the restoration of law and order in the state. She also demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities in the election process.
The BJP, however, dismissed Banerjee's allegations as baseless and accused her of refusing to accept the democratic verdict. State BJP leaders argued that the results were a reflection of the people's desire for change and development.
As tensions escalate in the state, security has been tightened in sensitive areas. The TMC has announced plans to hold protests across West Bengal to highlight their grievances. The coming days are likely to witness heightened political confrontation between the two parties.
