MP Congress to Shift MLAs to Karnataka Ahead of RS Polls

The Madhya Pradesh Congress is planning to relocate its MLAs to Karnataka ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, amid fears of poaching by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The move is aimed at ensuring that all party legislators remain united and vote as per the party whip, preventing any defections that could weaken the Congress's position in the polls.

Electoral Math

With the effective strength of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly at 229, a candidate requires 58 first-preference votes to secure election to the Upper House of Parliament. The Congress, which has 96 MLAs in the state, is short of the required number and will need support from other parties or independents to get its candidate elected. The party is also wary of the BJP's attempts to lure its lawmakers with offers of money or positions.

Precautionary Measure

This is not the first time that a political party has shifted its MLAs to another state to prevent poaching. In the past, both the Congress and the BJP have moved their legislators to resorts or other states during crucial elections. The Congress believes that by moving its MLAs to Karnataka, where it is in power, it can provide them with a secure environment and ensure their loyalty.

The party has already started making arrangements for the relocation, and the MLAs are expected to be flown to Karnataka in the coming days. The Congress high command is closely monitoring the situation and has issued a whip to all MLAs to be present for the Rajya Sabha polls.

The Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to be held next month, and the Congress is hoping to win at least one seat from the state. The party is also in talks with other opposition parties to forge a united front against the BJP.
