Activist Sonam Wangchuk has voiced concerns that Ladakh could become another Manipur if the central government does not address the region's longstanding demands. However, he noted a positive shift in the recent talks with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Positive shift in MHA talks
Wangchuk acknowledged that the discussions with the MHA have been constructive so far. He stated that the government has shown a willingness to engage in dialogue, which marks a departure from the earlier stance. The activist emphasized that this change in approach is crucial for building trust and resolving the issues plaguing Ladakh.
Unresolved issues persist
Despite the positive developments, Wangchuk highlighted several unresolved issues that continue to undermine confidence. One of the key concerns is the ongoing seizure of his mobile phone, which was confiscated by authorities during protests about eight months ago. He pointed out that the phone contains important data and contacts, and its continued retention by the government raises questions about transparency and accountability.
Wangchuk also stressed that the core demands of the Ladakh region, including constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule and protection of land and employment rights, remain unaddressed. He warned that without concrete actions, the situation could escalate similar to Manipur, where ethnic violence has led to a breakdown of law and order.
Call for sustained dialogue
The activist urged the government to maintain the momentum of the talks and take tangible steps to resolve the grievances. He expressed hope that the MHA would expedite the return of his phone and address other pending issues to foster a climate of trust. Wangchuk reiterated that the people of Ladakh are committed to peaceful protests but expect meaningful outcomes from the negotiations.
The MHA, on its part, has assured that all concerns will be examined sympathetically. The next round of talks is expected to take place soon, with both sides optimistic about reaching a consensus.
