UCC won't affect tribals, Shah urges community not to fall for conspiracies

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured the tribal community that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not affect them and urged them not to fall for what he termed as 'conspiracies' being spread by opposition parties. Addressing a tribal conclave organized to mark the 150th birth anniversary year of tribal icon Birsa Munda at the Red Fort grounds, Shah said special provisions have been made in BJP-ruled states implementing the UCC to keep tribal communities out of its ambit.

Shah's assurance to tribals

Shah said that the BJP-led governments in states that have implemented the UCC have ensured that the unique customs, traditions, and personal laws of tribal communities remain untouched. He emphasized that there is no question of imposing any law that would harm the interests of tribals, who are an integral part of the country's social fabric. The Home Minister accused certain political parties of spreading misinformation and trying to create fear among tribals to gain political mileage.

Birsa Munda's legacy

The event was held to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a revered tribal freedom fighter who led a rebellion against the British in the late 19th century. Shah paid tributes to Munda, saying his sacrifice and struggle continue to inspire the nation. He called upon the tribal community to remember Munda's teachings and work towards the development of the country.

Political context

The UCC has been a contentious issue in Indian politics, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of trying to impose a uniform legal framework that would override the personal laws of various communities, including tribals. The BJP has maintained that the UCC aims to ensure gender justice and national integration, while also protecting the rights of marginalized groups. Shah's remarks come amid a broader push by the BJP to implement the UCC in states where it is in power, with assurances that tribal customs will be safeguarded.

The Home Minister urged tribal leaders and community members to be vigilant and not fall prey to 'conspiracies' aimed at dividing society. He reiterated the government's commitment to the welfare of tribals, citing various schemes and initiatives launched by the Modi administration for their upliftment.
