DLSA Gurgaon Launches Aid Program for Families of Jail Inmates
DLSA Gurgaon Aid for Families of Jail Inmates

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Gurgaon has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting families of jail inmates who are facing financial hardships, psychological distress, or difficulties accessing government welfare schemes. This program is designed to strengthen support systems for these families and facilitate the smoother reintegration of prisoners into society upon their release.

Eligibility and Scope of Assistance

Under the program, families of inmates who are nearing the completion of their sentences, as well as undertrials who have spent more than a year in jail, will be eligible for support. The DLSA will provide a comprehensive range of assistance, including legal aid, educational support, social services, psychological counseling, and welfare benefits to the dependents of prisoners.

Implementation of the SPRUHA Scheme 2025

Nisha, chief judicial magistrate-cum-secretary of DLSA Gurgaon, stated that the initiative has been launched for the effective implementation of the SPRUHA Scheme, 2025, which stands for Supporting Potential and Resilience of the Unseen, Held-back and Affected. She elaborated that the jail administration has been requested to facilitate interaction between inmates and DLSA officials, panel advocates, and para-legal volunteers. This will help identify eligible beneficiaries and connect them with various welfare measures. Special focus will be given to children, women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable dependents of inmates.

Ensuring Access to Justice

Narender Sura, district and sessions judge-cum-chairman of DLSA Gurgaon, emphasized that access to justice is not confined to courtrooms. He stressed that families of inmates should not be deprived of their legal rights and welfare entitlements due to circumstances beyond their control. The program aims to bridge this gap and ensure that these families receive the support they need.

This initiative marks a significant step toward addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by families of incarcerated individuals, promoting social reintegration, and upholding the principles of justice and equity.
