A dispute over the arrangement of their mother’s post-death ritual ‘brahm bhoj’ turned deadly in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich area on Tuesday. A man allegedly shot his younger brother dead during a heated argument at their home in Barki Rewtiya village.
Incident Details
The victim, identified as Shubham Sharma, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Nehru Hospital at BRD Medical College, where doctors declared him brought dead. The accused, 40-year-old Durgvijay Sharma, remains absconding, police said.
Root Cause
According to authorities, tensions had been simmering among the brothers over the arrangements for the ‘brahm bhoj’ following their mother’s recent demise. While Shubham and another brother wanted a joint ceremony, Durgvijay and one more sibling reportedly favored holding separate events. This disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation on Tuesday afternoon.
The Attack
During the argument, Durgvijay allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and fired at Shubham, hitting him in the chest. The incident caused panic among family members and villagers. Pipraich police arrived at the scene after receiving information, inspected the crime spot, and collected evidence.
Investigation
SP North Gyanendra Kumar stated that preliminary investigation suggests the murder stemmed from a family dispute over the ‘brahm bhoj’ arrangements. Police have formed teams to track down and arrest the accused.
