Gorakhpur/Lucknow: A 23-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by his elder brother during a dispute over expenses for their mother’s post-death ‘Brahma Bhoj’ in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich area on Tuesday. The accused, an auto-rickshaw driver, is absconding, while his wife and daughter have been detained.

Incident Details

The incident took place in Jungle Dhushan Barki Retwahiya village, where the family had gathered for the ‘Brahm Bhoj’ ceremony of Savitri Devi, who died 16 days ago. The victim, Satyaprakash alias Shubham Sharma (23), who worked at a local shop, sustained a gunshot injury to the chest. He was rushed to Nehru Hospital at BRD Medical College, where doctors declared him dead.

Trigger of the Dispute

According to police, the incident was triggered by a verbal altercation involving the accused’s wife. ASP North Gyanendranath Prasad said, “Accused Durgvijay Sharma’s wife had reached the venue first and got into a verbal spat with Satyaprakash. When the husband saw the altercation, he lost his temper and, in a fit of rage, opened fire using an unlicensed weapon before fleeing the spot.”
