Kolkata Police Re-examine 2021 Post-Poll Violence Cases

Kolkata: The police have commenced a fresh examination of cases related to post-poll violence that occurred in 2021, with a view to initiating legal action. This development comes days after the state government ordered a comprehensive review of all such cases, particularly those involving crimes against women. Sources indicate that approximately 300 cases across West Bengal, including several in Kolkata, are currently under scrutiny.

High-Level Meeting Directs Speedy Probes

At a high-level meeting held at Lalbazar on Thursday, officers in charge of all police stations were instructed to expedite investigations into crimes against women, especially cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They have been directed to file charge sheets promptly to ensure faster trials.

Focus on Crimes Against Women After 2021 Polls

A key area of focus is alleged crimes against women that took place following the 2021 assembly elections. Assistant commissioners and deputy commissioners of police have been asked to regularly update top state officials on the progress of these investigations.

The move follows a prolonged legal battle that reached the Supreme Court, which upheld a Calcutta High Court order directing investigations into serious offences, including murder and rape, allegedly linked to the violence after the 2021 elections.

Priority on Missing Girl Children and Crackdown on Illegal Arms

Police have also been instructed to prioritize cases involving missing girl children, with senior officers required to personally review such cases. Additionally, the state has directed the police to continue crackdowns on illegal arms, explosives, and organized crime.
