Mangaluru: Msgr Leslie Shenoy, a 79-year-old priest and philanthropist from Urwa, Mangaluru, passed away on Sunday at Fr Muller Hospital. Born on October 4, 1947, in Urwa, he was widely recognized for his humble nature, deep faith, and lifelong commitment to service. He was ordained as a priest on May 14, 1976, and later served in the Diocese of Fresno in the United States from 1979 onwards.
Life and Contributions
Despite settling abroad and becoming an American citizen in 1985, Msgr Shenoy remained deeply connected to his hometown. He continued to support numerous humanitarian and educational initiatives in the region. Among his notable contributions was the establishment of the 'Msgr Leslie F Shenoy Scholarship' through the Catholic Board of Education, which assists deserving students in pursuing higher education. He also funded bursaries for seminarians and extended support to underprivileged families by donating vehicles to help them earn a livelihood.
Senior Citizen Home and Legacy
In 2025, he donated a senior citizen home in Puttur, reportedly built using his retirement savings, to provide shelter and care for the elderly. Those who knew him remember him as a simple, approachable, and compassionate priest who dedicated his life to serving society and uplifting the poor. His contributions towards education, priestly formation, and social welfare continue to touch many lives.
Funeral Arrangements
Public homage will be held from 2:30 pm, followed by the funeral Mass at 3:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Church, Urwa, Mangaluru, on May 27.
