For many New Yorkers, this was supposed to be a celebration years in the making. The Knicks entered the night holding a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals, and Manhattan had been buzzing for days. However, conversations outside the arena shifted from basketball to security restrictions, canceled watch parties, and frustration over how difficult it had become to simply enter Madison Square Garden.
Frustration Mounts Among Knicks Fans
President Trump arrived at Madison Square Garden shortly before 8 p.m. after traveling from Bedminster, New Jersey, aboard Marine One. His motorcade moved through Manhattan under tight security before reaching the arena roughly 30 minutes before tipoff.
The presidential visit triggered extensive security precautions around the Garden. Streets surrounding the venue were blocked off, anti-scale fencing lined the perimeter, and fans encountered enhanced screening measures. The annual watch party outside the arena was also canceled. "The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, made the decision for Game 3, where we have a presidential visit, that we could not support watch parties right outside of the Garden," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said earlier in the day.
Inside and outside the arena, the impact was noticeable. Fans reported moving through multiple entrances and lengthy lines. NYC reporter Christopher Robbins captured the atmosphere outside MSG and shared on X: "POV you paid $10,000 for a Knicks ticket but can't get into MSG."
