IPL 2026 Playoff Race: One Spot, Three Teams, Final Day

After 68 matches, 25,105 runs, and 793 wickets, the league stage of IPL 2026 comes down to one dramatic final day. One playoff spot remains, three teams are still alive, and by Sunday night, two dreams will end while one carries forward into the playoffs.

Top Teams Secure Positions

At the top, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans have already secured the top two spots with 18 points each. They will face off in Qualifier 1. Sunrisers Hyderabad, also on 18 points but with an inferior net run rate, are locked into third place and await their Eliminator opponent.

The Fourth Playoff Spot

The fourth and final playoff berth is yet to be decided. Its fate rests on Super Sunday with two matches remaining: Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals.

Current Points Standings

  • PBKS: 15 points (all matches done)
  • RR: 14 points (1 match left vs MI)
  • KKR: 13 points (1 match left vs DC)

Punjab Kings, whose league stage is over, currently occupy fourth place provisionally but their qualification is no longer in their own hands.

Scenarios for Each Team

Punjab Kings (PBKS) qualify if:

  • RR lose to MI, and KKR lose or match is washed out (PBKS qualify outright).
  • If KKR beat DC by a close margin, PBKS edge KKR on net run rate.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) qualify if:

  • RR beat MI, taking them to 16 points, automatically above PBKS (15) and KKR's maximum (15). No net run rate calculations needed.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) qualify only if:

  • RR lose to MI, and KKR beat DC by enough margin to surpass PBKS on net run rate. KKR's current net run rate of +0.011 is significantly behind PBKS's +0.309, meaning KKR need a win by around 76 runs or more if batting first, or chase a target in about 12 overs if chasing.

Required Margins for KKR

If KKR bat first:

  • Score 160: need to restrict DC to 82 or lower (win by 78 runs)
  • Score 200: need to restrict DC to 123 or lower (win by 77 runs)
  • Score 240: need to restrict DC to 165 or lower (win by 76 runs)

If KKR chase successfully:

  • Target 140-160: chase within 12 overs
  • Target 161-180: chase within 12.1 overs
  • Target 181-200: chase within 12.1 overs
  • Target 201-220: chase within 12.2 overs
  • Target 221-240: chase within 12.3 overs

Decisive Day Ahead

If RR beat MI in the afternoon clash, the playoff race ends immediately. RR become the fourth qualifier, and the evening game becomes irrelevant to qualification. However, if MI upsets RR, Eden Gardens will host a virtual knockout. PBKS will become Delhi Capitals supporters, hoping for a win or avoiding a crushing defeat. KKR will know exactly what they need by the time they walk onto the field. One final day, two matches, three contenders, one remaining seat in the playoffs.
