Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday by winning the Italian Open, defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets to claim his third ATP Masters 1000 title. The victory also saw the Italian become the first player ever to complete the Golden Masters—winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments at least once in his career.
Dominant Performance in Rome
Sinner, the world number two, showcased his exceptional form throughout the tournament. In the final, he overcame a resilient Zverev with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3, displaying powerful groundstrokes and tactical brilliance. The match lasted one hour and 41 minutes, with Sinner breaking Zverev's serve three times while saving all break points he faced.
This triumph marks Sinner's second Masters 1000 title of the season, following his victory in Miami earlier this year. He also won the Australian Open in January, solidifying his status as one of the top players on the ATP Tour.
The Golden Masters Achievement
The Golden Masters is a rare feat in tennis, requiring a player to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai, and Paris. Sinner's victory in Rome completed the set, as he had previously won the other eight tournaments over the past few seasons.
Only a handful of players have come close to this achievement, with Novak Djokovic winning all nine but not in the same calendar year. Sinner's accomplishment is particularly remarkable given the dominance of the 'Big Three'—Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer—who collectively won most Masters titles in the past two decades.
Reactions and Future Prospects
After the match, Sinner expressed his joy and gratitude. 'Winning in Rome is special, especially in front of my home crowd. Completing the Golden Masters is a dream come true. I want to thank my team and the fans for their support,' he said.
Zverev, despite the loss, praised Sinner's performance. 'Jannik played incredible tennis today. He deserved to win. I will work hard to come back stronger,' the German commented.
With this victory, Sinner extends his lead in the ATP Race to Turin, positioning himself as a top contender for the year-end ATP Finals. Tennis enthusiasts now look forward to the French Open, where Sinner will aim to win his second Grand Slam title.
