NEW DELHI: The countdown for Delhi Airport's Terminal 2 (T2), built in 1986, has begun as it is likely to be abandoned by 2033. Meanwhile, Terminal 3 (T3) is set to expand significantly. GMR-run Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) is evaluating the timeline for adding a fifth pier to T3, which will have an annual capacity of 1.2 crore passengers (CPA), equivalent to T2's capacity. Once completed, domestic traffic from T2 will shift to T3's new Pier E.
Master Plan and Key Elements
The timing of Pier E and the proposed automated people mover (air train) are central to the new master plan for Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). DIAL will submit the master plan to the aviation ministry in a few months. GBS Raju, chairman of GMR Airports, stated, "Our primary focus is on when Pier E should be built — whether soon or in a decade — and having the automated people mover operational in 30 months. T2 can be used for a maximum of six to seven more years, after which it must be abandoned. The future use of the T2 site will be decided based on traffic trends."
Aligning with Airline Strategies
To determine the optimal timing for Pier E, which will be built near the ramp leading to T3, DIAL is consulting airlines about their capacity needs based on aircraft induction schedules. Delivery delays of Airbus and Boeing planes due to supply chain issues, including seats and engines, are affecting plans. The ongoing US-Iran conflict has added uncertainty regarding oil prices and travel demand. Raju noted, "The master plan will align with airlines' strategy. Due to the West Asia crisis, finalization is taking longer."
Expansion Requirements
Getting the timing right is crucial, as T3 expansion involves significant work beyond building the new pier, including widening the ramp and extending the forecourt. With Pier C converted from domestic to international, T3 now has three international piers handling up to 3.4 CPA. Pier D, the only domestic pier, handles 90 lakh passengers annually. Raju emphasized, "There are options for future use of the T2 site; we must be agile in a dynamic world."
Concession Period and Future Plans
DIAL's new master plan focuses on Pier E and the automated people mover, as other major projects in GMR's first 30-year concession period (ending in a decade) are complete. Whether Pier E is built now or during the second 30-year concession period (subject to government approval) remains to be seen.
