Shillong achieved a significant milestone in its journey towards sustainable public transportation with the launch of its first fleet of five electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma flagged off the buses on Tuesday, marking a pivotal step in the hill city's transition to a modern and reliable public transport system.
Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility
The introduction of these electric buses represents a major advancement in promoting sustainable urban mobility, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening public transport infrastructure in the state. The initiative aims to provide citizens with cleaner, greener, and more efficient public transportation services, aligning with national goals for environmental sustainability.
Features of the New Electric Buses
The newly launched buses are fully air-conditioned, zero-emission vehicles built on a safe stainless-steel chassis. They are capable of covering approximately 180 to 200 kilometers on a single charge. Each bus can accommodate up to 25 passengers in addition to the driver, featuring a comfortable 2x2 seating layout with overhead storage facilities.
Designed to be inclusive and commuter-friendly, the buses are equipped with designated wheelchair spaces and foldable ramps to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities. Additionally, they feature a modern e-ticketing system aimed at providing passengers with a seamless and convenient travel experience.
Chief Minister's Vision for Public Transport
While acknowledging the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India in advancing sustainable public transportation across the country, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated, "The ultimate objective of this entire exercise is to determine how we can decongest Shillong and encourage people to use public transportation instead of relying on private vehicles."
The CM reiterated the state government's commitment to promoting electric mobility and informed that the policy providing exemptions on registration fees and road taxes for electric vehicles is being renewed following the completion of its initial three-year term.
Encouraging Electric Vehicle Adoption
"Electric vehicles are not only viable in Meghalaya but can actually perform very effectively in our terrain. I sincerely hope that more and more citizens begin using electric vehicles because it is the right direction for us to move towards," the CM said.
He also highlighted opportunities for communities and private landowners to participate in the development of charging infrastructure and parking facilities through government-supported initiatives, which can generate both revenue and employment opportunities.
The launch of these electric buses marks a new chapter in Shillong's public transport system, setting a precedent for other cities in the region to follow.
