Retired govt employee loses Rs 2 lakh to cyber fraud

Nagpur: A 74-year-old retired government employee was duped of Rs 2 lakh by cyber fraudsters who hacked his mobile phone while posing as customer care executives of a delivery company. The victim, Ramesh Darvhekar, a resident of Swavalambi Nagar, had sent a parcel to his daughter in Gujarat through a courier on May 27. When the parcel failed to reach its destination, Darvhekar contacted the company's customer care number.

The fraudsters, operating through WhatsApp, tricked him into sharing details under the pretext of resolving the issue. They subsequently gained access to his mobile phone and siphoned off the entire amount from his accounts in two nationalized banks through multiple unauthorized transactions. The incident came to light when Darvhekar noticed the missing funds. He immediately lodged a complaint at Pratap Nagar police station. The case was registered on June 1 under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, along with other IPC provisions.

This incident highlights the growing threat of cyber fraud, particularly targeting senior citizens who may be less familiar with digital security measures. Authorities urge the public to be cautious when sharing personal information over the phone or through messaging apps, and to verify the authenticity of customer care numbers before engaging with them.
