At least 12 cows died and seven others fell critically ill after allegedly consuming leftover food from a 'terhavi' ceremony held following the death of a village head in Bhainsa village of Mathura district, officials said on Sunday.

Incident Details

On Saturday evening, three days after the ceremony was held following the death of the sitting gram pradhan, a large quantity of malpua and vegetables, among other food items, which remained unused for days, was taken to a local gaushala for cattle consumption. Officials said the food may have become contaminated, leading to the deaths of 12 cows. A veterinary team from the animal husbandry department had begun treatment of the sick cattle, including seven critical ones.

Investigation Ordered

Mathura district magistrate CP Singh said a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. 'The team will submit its report, based on which further action will be taken,' Singh said. SHO of Refinery police station Ajay Kaushal said additional police personnel have been deployed in the village 'in view of the sensitivity of the matter'.
