One person was killed and 17 others were reported missing after heavy rainfall battered Yongchuan District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, starting Saturday night, according to local authorities reporting to Xinhua.
Heavy Rainstorm Hits Yongchuan District
A severe rainstorm struck the district from Saturday night through Sunday morning. The Chashanzhuhai subdistrict recorded the highest rainfall of 296.6 mm between 2 am and 4 am on Sunday, with a maximum hourly rainfall intensity of 103.6 mm, as reported by the on-site command headquarters for flood control and rescue operations.
Geological Disaster Warning
Meteorological authorities have warned that continuous precipitation increases the risk of geological disasters, including landslides, collapses, and debris flows. In response, Chongqing activated a Level-III emergency response for geological disasters in Yongchuan District at 7 am on Sunday. Local departments are currently carrying out emergency rescue efforts.
Death Toll Rises in Hunan Province
Meanwhile, in Shimen County, central China's Hunan Province, the death toll from heavy rainfall has risen to seven, with 14 others still missing, local authorities confirmed. Among the missing, five were added after further investigation. Search and rescue operations are underway in the affected areas.
Government Support for Recovery
The National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 50 million yuan (approximately $7.31 million) to support post-flood emergency recovery efforts in Hunan. This funding aims to assist in rebuilding and providing relief to those impacted by the floods.
The situation remains critical as authorities continue to monitor the weather and carry out rescue operations. Residents in affected regions are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
