Eight Drown Collecting Mussels in Karnataka, Rs 5 Lakh Solatium

Eight people drowned while collecting mussels in a river in Karnataka, prompting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to announce a solatium of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. According to police sources, around 14 people from Shirali village had entered the river to collect mussels, a seasonal activity practised by local communities along riverbanks and coastal regions.

The incident occurred on 24 May 2026, and the news was reported by PTI. The chief minister expressed his condolences and assured all possible assistance to the affected families. The solatium of Rs 5 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each of the eight victims.

Mussel collection is a common practice during certain times of the year, especially in coastal and riverine areas of Karnataka. However, such activities often carry risks, particularly during monsoon seasons when water levels can rise unexpectedly. Local authorities have been urged to issue warnings and ensure safety measures for people engaged in such livelihood activities.

The drowning incident has raised concerns about the safety of traditional practices and the need for better awareness and preventive measures. The state government is expected to review safety protocols and possibly provide training or equipment to local communities involved in river-based livelihoods.
