Israeli air defense systems intercepted a drone launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen over the southern Red Sea city of Eilat, the Israeli military confirmed. Sirens blared across the city as the unmanned aerial vehicle approached, but the military stated it was successfully shot down before impact. Dramatic footage reportedly showed interceptors streaking through the sky.
Escalating Attacks from Yemen
The incident followed two ballistic missile launches by the Houthis earlier the same day, underscoring a sharp escalation in attacks targeting Israel from Yemen. Eilat, a strategic port city on the Red Sea, has frequently been targeted due to its proximity to Yemeni missile and drone ranges.
Regional Tensions Rise
The fresh assault comes amid heightened regional tensions, with simultaneous drone alerts also reported in connection with Hezbollah activity from Lebanon. The Iranian-backed groups have intensified operations against Israel, raising fears of a broader conflict.
The Israeli military continues to monitor the situation closely, maintaining a high state of alert along multiple fronts. The Houthis have launched repeated attacks on Israel since the start of the Gaza war, often targeting Eilat with drones and missiles.
