Zojila Tunnel: Engineering Wonder for All-Weather Kashmir-Ladakh Link
Zojila Tunnel: All-Weather Kashmir-Ladakh Connectivity

The Zojila Tunnel, a monumental engineering project in the Himalayas, is set to revolutionize connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh by providing an all-weather road link. This tunnel, once completed, will eliminate the isolation of Ladakh during winter months when the Zojila Pass remains closed due to heavy snowfall.

Project Overview

The Zojila Tunnel is a 14.2-kilometer-long tunnel that will pass under the Zojila Pass at an altitude of about 3,528 meters. It is part of the ambitious Z-Morh tunnel project and will be the longest bi-directional tunnel in Asia. The project is being executed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) at a cost of approximately ₹6,800 crore.

Strategic Importance

This tunnel holds immense strategic importance for the Indian military, as it will ensure round-the-year connectivity to forward areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. It will also boost tourism and economic development in Ladakh, which currently relies heavily on air travel during winters.

Engineering Challenges

Constructing a tunnel in such a challenging terrain involves overcoming extreme weather conditions, geological complexities, and logistical hurdles. Engineers are using advanced techniques like New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) to ensure stability and safety. The tunnel will have a two-lane carriageway with a parallel escape tunnel for emergencies.

Expected Benefits

Once operational, the Zojila Tunnel will reduce travel time between Srinagar and Leh by about 3-4 hours. It will also lower transportation costs and provide reliable access to essential supplies for the region. The project is expected to be completed by 2026, marking a new era of connectivity in the region.
