The national capital continues to reel under extreme heat as temperatures soared past 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next three days, warning residents of severe heatwave conditions.
Temperature Soars Across Delhi
According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 45.2 degrees Celsius in Mungeshpur, while other areas like Ridge and Palam recorded 44.8 and 44.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimum temperature also remained high at 30.2 degrees Celsius, providing little relief to the residents.
Yellow Alert Issued
The IMD has predicted that the heatwave will persist for the next three days, with temperatures likely to remain above 44 degrees Celsius. A yellow alert has been issued to caution the public about the intense heat. Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours.
The weather department also indicated that there is no significant change expected in the weather pattern until the weekend. However, some respite may come in the form of light rain or thundershowers in some parts of the city towards the end of the week.
Health Advisory
Health officials have urged residents to avoid stepping out between 12 PM and 4 PM, which are the hottest hours. Hospitals have been put on high alert to handle cases of heatstroke and dehydration. The Delhi government has also directed power distribution companies to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to prevent any inconvenience due to the heat.
This heatwave has been attributed to the lack of western disturbances and the prevalence of hot and dry winds from Rajasthan. Experts warn that such extreme temperatures could become more frequent due to climate change.
