In a significant step towards sustainable tourism, Himachal Pradesh has introduced electric buses on the scenic but environmentally sensitive Rohtang Pass route. The move aims to curb vehicular pollution and preserve the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, which has been under threat from increasing tourist traffic.
Launch and Operations
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) flagged off the first fleet of electric buses from Manali to Rohtang Pass. These buses are part of the state's broader initiative to adopt green energy and reduce carbon emissions. Initially, four electric buses will ply on this route, with plans to expand the fleet based on demand and infrastructure development.
Environmental Impact
Rohtang Pass, located at an altitude of 13,050 feet, attracts thousands of tourists annually. However, the surge in diesel and petrol vehicles has led to increased air and noise pollution, affecting glaciers and local biodiversity. The introduction of electric buses is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint, as these vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions.

Future Plans
HRTC plans to introduce more electric buses on other high-altitude routes, including Manali-Leh and Shimla-Kinnaur. The corporation is also exploring the use of hydrogen fuel-cell buses for longer distances. With the success of the Rohtang Pass pilot, Himachal Pradesh aims to achieve 100% electric public transport in tourist zones by 2030.
