In a proactive measure to ensure uninterrupted power supply during severe heatwave conditions, the Tata Power-led distribution companies (discoms) in Odisha have activated an emergency response system. This includes round-the-clock network monitoring and enhanced customer support mechanisms.
Deployment of Field Staff
According to a statement from Tata Power, more than 26,000 trained field personnel are engaged in continuous operations. This workforce comprises maintenance teams, breakdown response units, supervisors, and safety officers. Their primary goal is to ensure quick restoration of services and reliable electricity delivery throughout the summer season.
Public Anger Over Power Cuts
Frequent and prolonged power outages, coupled with low voltage issues during the scorching summer, have sparked public outrage in several parts of Odisha. The discoms are striving to address these grievances through their enhanced response measures.
Strategic Positioning of Equipment
To facilitate rapid restoration during emergencies, the discoms have strategically positioned critical materials and restoration equipment across various operational areas. This logistical preparation aims to minimize downtime and improve service reliability.
Peak Demand Surge
Tata Power reported that the discoms are currently managing a peak demand of 6,739 megawatts (MW) across Odisha. This represents an increase of nearly 300 MW compared to last year's peak demand of 6,447 MW. In Bhubaneswar alone, peak demand has surged by 17%, rising from 641 MW in the previous financial year to 750 MW this summer.
The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining power supply despite the challenging weather conditions and growing demand.
