The GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has set June 30 as the final deadline for filing appeals against GST orders issued before April 1, 2026. No appeals will be accepted after the portal closes, confirmed Manoj Shankar, vice-president of GSTAT Bihar, during an awareness programme organized by the Bihar Industries Association (BIA) in Patna on Tuesday.
Urgent Call for Taxpayers
Addressing industrialists, traders, tax professionals, and taxpayers, Shankar emphasized that GSTATs are now operational nationwide. He urged eligible taxpayers to file appeals well before the deadline to avoid last-minute complications.
Low Appeal Count in Bihar
Technical member Sanjay Kumar Mavadiya revealed that approximately 16,500 appeals have been filed before GSTATs across the country so far. However, Bihar has recorded only 210 appeals, despite having a much larger pool of eligible cases. This disparity highlights the need for greater awareness and action among taxpayers in the state.
Business Community Expectations
BIA secretary general Amarnath Jaiswal expressed that the business community expects the newly constituted tribunal to ensure fair and time-bound resolution of disputes between taxpayers and tax authorities. The tribunal aims to adopt a taxpayer-friendly approach, as stated by judicial member Manoj Kumar Sinha. A help desk has been established to assist taxpayers and professionals with filing-related issues.
E-Filing Process and Fee Structure
Assistant registrar Rajeev Kumar Pandey explained the e-filing process, documentation requirements, and fee structure. The filing fee is 1% of the disputed amount for every Rs 1 lakh involved, with a minimum of Rs 5,000 and a maximum of Rs 25,000. During the interaction, BIA representatives highlighted challenges in the e-filing system, including word limits and the need to translate Hindi GST orders into English for filing appeals.
