Pune Jail Inmate Dupes 10 of Rs 1.5 Crore in Car Scam

A case of cheating was registered on Friday against a man who is already lodged in Yerawada prison on a rape charge. He allegedly duped more than 10 people of Rs 1.5 crore by promising them cars at a discounted rate.

Complaint Filed by Software Engineer

A 35-year-old software engineer from Ravet lost Rs 14 lakh to the suspect, prompting him to file a complaint with the Hinjewadi police. The police plan to take the suspect into custody after seeking permission from the court.

How the Scam Unfolded

The complainant came into contact with the suspect in October 2024. The suspect posed as a car dealer and promised a 20% discount on vehicles. He took Rs 14.9 lakh from the complainant under the pretext of booking a car but never did. After repeated follow-ups, the suspect returned only Rs 1 lakh.

Assistant Police Inspector Somnath Panchal of the Hinjewadi police stated that the suspect also took money from the complainant's friends, assuring them of discounted cars. He even took money from some individuals claiming he needed it for medical care. In total, he collectively duped 10 people of Rs 1.5 crore.

Method of Payment and Charges

The suspect received money through bank transfers and credit cards. He has been charged under Sections 316 (criminal breach of trust) and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigations are ongoing.
