Stock Markets Closed on May 28 for Bakri Id: 2026 Holidays

Investors will experience a mid-week trading break as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, in observance of Bakri Id. According to a report by ET, trading across equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments will be suspended for the day, resulting in a shortened trading week for Dalal Street participants. This holiday follows the market closure on May 1 for Maharashtra Day.

2026 Stock Market Holiday Calendar

Per the 2026 stock exchange holiday calendar, stock markets have 16 scheduled holidays this year. Eight of these have already passed, while seven more closures remain after the Bakri Id break. The next trading holiday after May 28 will be on June 26 for Muharram. Markets will also remain shut later this year on the following dates:

  • September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi
  • October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 20 for Dussehra
  • November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada

Commodity Market Schedule

Commodity markets will follow a different schedule. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during the morning session on May 28 but will resume operations in the evening session. In contrast, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain shut for both sessions.

Weekend Holidays and Muhurat Trading

Four scheduled holidays in 2026 fall on weekends and therefore will not result in additional market closures. These include Mahashivratri on February 15, Eid-Ul-Fitr on March 21, Independence Day on August 15, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8. Although Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on a Sunday this year, exchanges will still conduct the customary Muhurat Trading session on November 8. The timing for the one-hour special session will be announced closer to the date.
