India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded its global footprint with Cambodia joining the list of countries where Indians can make payments using the service. This makes Cambodia the ninth country to accept UPI payments, following partnerships with local banks and governments for cross-border transactions via QR codes.
Expanding UPI's Global Reach
The addition of Cambodia underscores India's efforts to promote UPI as a global digital payment solution. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has been actively collaborating with international counterparts to enable seamless cross-border payments. With Cambodia, UPI now operates in nine countries, including Singapore, UAE, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, and the UK.
How It Works
Indian travelers in Cambodia can now use UPI-enabled apps to scan QR codes at merchant outlets, eliminating the need for currency exchange or international transaction fees. The system leverages existing partnerships with Cambodian banks to facilitate real-time settlements. This move is expected to boost tourism and business exchanges between the two nations.
Benefits for Indians
For Indian tourists and business professionals, this integration offers convenience and cost savings. UPI payments are processed at competitive exchange rates, and users can track transactions through their existing UPI apps. The service also enhances financial inclusion by providing a familiar payment method abroad.
Future Prospects
India continues to explore similar partnerships with other countries to expand UPI's reach. The NPCI aims to make UPI a globally accepted payment system, reducing reliance on traditional banking channels. With Cambodia on board, the total number of countries accepting UPI is expected to grow further in the coming years.
This development aligns with India's digital public infrastructure goals, promoting interoperability and ease of transactions across borders. As more countries adopt UPI, Indian travelers and businesses stand to benefit from a unified payment ecosystem.
