Massive ₹500 Crore Franchise Fraud Exposed, 200+ Businessmen Duped Across India
A staggering alleged fraud scheme exceeding ₹500 crore, which targeted more than 200 businessmen across several Indian states, was publicly revealed on Saturday. The victims held a press conference in Lucknow's Hazratganj area, directly accusing a Mumbai-based operator of systematically duping investors under the guise of a popular brand franchise opportunity.
Police Action and Arrests Made
Gorakhpur police had previously taken action by arresting three individuals from Mumbai on April 3. The arrested persons have been identified as Kashif Khan (49), Naveen Ahuja (33), and Krishna Shah (27). This development came as victims from diverse regions including Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, and Rajasthan came forward with their harrowing experiences.
How the Elaborate Fraud Was Executed
According to detailed accounts from the defrauded businessmen, the main accused Kashif Khan allegedly presented himself as a pivotal figure with direct connections to the popular brand. To establish credibility and lure investors, he reportedly utilized high-profile references, including notable personalities such as actress Shilpa Shetty and businessman Raj Kundra.
Victims were enticed with promises of highly lucrative franchise deals, leading them to invest substantial sums of money. Lucknow-based trader Manoj Agarwal provided a specific account, alleging he invested over ₹39 lakh between 2022 and 2023. In return, he received only dubious agreements and absolutely no financial returns.
Widespread Impact and Victim Testimonies
Similar distressing stories were shared by numerous other victims during the press conference. Delhi-based businessman Vikas Bansal and Mumbai's Rajesh Talwani both came forward, claiming individual losses running into crores of rupees. The collective narrative paints a picture of a sophisticated network that has allegedly been active for an extensive period of 12 to 14 years.
This long-running scheme specifically targeted small and mid-level entrepreneurs, many of whom are now reportedly burdened with significant debt as a direct consequence of their investments. The fraudulent activities have prompted the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) in multiple states across the country.
Victims' Demands and Calls for Action
In a unified appeal, the victims have urgently called upon Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene. Their specific demands include:
- Ordering a comprehensive, high-level investigation into the entire fraud network.
- Immediate seizure of the main accused's passport to prevent international flight.
- Ensuring that the accused are denied bail, citing serious concerns that they may attempt to flee the country if released.
The exposure of this massive alleged fraud highlights critical vulnerabilities in investment safeguards and underscores the need for enhanced due diligence among entrepreneurs seeking franchise opportunities. The case continues to develop as authorities across states coordinate their investigative efforts.
