Air India Chairman Stresses Cost Discipline Amid Mounting Financial Pressures

In a critical address to employees, Air India and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has called for heightened cost precision and a grounded approach as the airline navigates significant financial challenges. Speaking at a townhall in Gurgaon, Chandrasekaran highlighted the impact of slower-than-expected turnaround efforts and external factors like the US-Iran war, which have compounded operational difficulties.

Focus on Execution and Cost Management

Chandrasekaran emphasized that while Air India's future remains bright with a solid foundation laid for growth, the current environment demands unwavering focus on execution. "Our focus should be on what is within our control, where we can improve, be precise on costs and remain grounded in the reality of the situation," he stated. This message comes shortly after the resignation of CEO Campbell Wilson and amid an ongoing search for his successor, adding to the airline's transitional phase.

Safety as a Non-Negotiable Priority

Addressing concerns over operational safety, particularly in light of incidents like the Ahmedabad crash, Chandrasekaran reaffirmed Air India's commitment to safety. "Safety is of utmost importance for Air India. It is non-negotiable and sits at the centre of every decision we take across operations, engineering, training and customer experience," he declared. This stance is crucial as the airline works to revamp its wide-body fleet, a process that has been progressing slower than anticipated.

Encouragement Amid Criticism and Challenges

Chandrasekaran urged employees to maintain pride in their work and handle criticism objectively. "Take pride in what is being done, feel proud of yourself, don't get distracted. Criticism will always be there but take it objectively. Don't get upset; there is no progress without criticism. If the core message of the criticism is justified, fix it," he advised. He also stressed the importance of teamwork and customer-centricity, noting that the transformation journey is still in its early stages.

Financial Strain and Transformation Efforts

Air India is projected to incur losses of approximately Rs 20,000 crore in FY 2026, driven by multiple factors including operational hurdles and fleet modernization delays. Despite this, Chandrasekaran praised employees for their resilience. "Air Indians have shown great tenacity in dealing with a perfect storm, and we must continue with the same spirit that has been demonstrated," he said. He assured that the Tata Group remains fully committed to Air India, with board support for ongoing management efforts.

Progress and Future Vision

Highlighting achievements over the past four years, Chandrasekaran outlined key milestones in Air India's transformation:

  • Hiring and onboarding over 17,000 employees
  • Merging four airlines into two entities
  • Modernizing core systems and expanding the fleet
  • Undertaking major aircraft refurbishment projects
  • Improving network and operational metrics to enhance customer experience

He concluded with a vision for the future: "We remain committed to building a world-class airline. Our vision is to connect India to the world, and to establish service standards where there is as much dignity and respect for the passenger in the last row as there is for the passenger in the front row." This pep talk aims to bolster morale as Air India continues its path toward recovery and growth amidst a turbulent industry landscape.
