India Seeks Preferential Access in US Trade Deal: Piyush Goyal
India Hopes for Preferential Access in US Trade Deal: Goyal

India Aims for Preferential Access in US Trade Agreement

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday stated that India hopes to gain preferential access to the US market through the proposed bilateral trade agreement, as negotiations intensify ahead of a key tariff deadline. Speaking at a media conference in New Delhi, Goyal noted that the 50 percent duty on India's imports is one factor delaying the finalization of the pact.

The minister's comments came ahead of a scheduled meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who is visiting New Delhi this week. Goyal expressed confidence that the first phase of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) could be completed by mid-July, with both sides working to resolve outstanding issues.

US Trade Representative to Hold Multiple Meetings

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed via his official X handle that Greer would hold multiple sessions with Goyal to advance the trade deal. “Looking forward to welcoming Ambassador Greer @USTradeRep to New Delhi! Multiple sessions scheduled with Minister @PiyushGoyal to advance the U.S.-India trade deal!” Gor wrote.

The ministerial-level meeting is part of ongoing talks to finalize the framework for the first phase of the BTA, which is expected to pave the way for a more comprehensive deal. The negotiations are critical as the United States' temporary 10 percent tariff on all trading partners is set to expire on July 24.

Key Tariff Deadline Looms

Earlier, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal indicated that discussions would focus on completing the framework agreement and advancing broader trade pact negotiations. Goyal reiterated that India aims to secure preferential access, which would reduce tariffs on Indian goods and boost exports.

The interim trade agreement is seen as a stepping stone toward a larger deal, with both countries eager to strengthen economic ties. The outcome of this week's meetings could significantly impact bilateral trade flows and set the stage for future cooperation.
