The Indian government is taking steps to eliminate confusion over the quantity of edible oil in packets by introducing standardized pack sizes. Currently, manufacturers often use varying weights such as 650 grams, 700 grams, 810 grams, 850 grams, and 870 grams, making it difficult for consumers to compare prices. Under the proposed new norms, pack sizes would be standardized to 200 ml, 500 ml, 1-5 litres, 15 litres or kg, and 20 litres or 20 kg.
Consumer Affairs Department's Initiative
The consumer affairs department has stated that it is examining the possibility of introducing standard pack sizes for edible oils under the legal metrology framework. This move follows suggestions received from major industry bodies that represent approximately 90% of the industry players. A meeting chaired by secretary Nidhi Khare with representatives of major edible oil industry associations took note of concerns regarding the increasing number of package sizes available in the market and the resulting difficulties faced by consumers in comparing prices.
Industry Consensus on Standardization
The department reported that there was a consensus among industry associations to introduce standard pack sizes for major edible oils. To ensure the availability of affordable small packs, the associations suggested that packs below 200 ml may continue to remain outside the scope of standardization. This would allow manufacturers to offer smaller, more affordable options for low-income consumers.
The initiative aims to bring transparency and ease to the purchasing process, enabling consumers to make informed choices without being misled by non-standard packaging. The government expects that this move will benefit millions of households across the country, as edible oil is a staple in Indian cooking.
