Indian Railways has introduced a new internal application called 'Punctuality BZA' designed to monitor the real-time punctuality of trains across its network. The app, developed by the railway's information technology wing, provides live updates on train running status and delays, enabling officials to take corrective actions promptly.
Key Features and Functionality
The Punctuality BZA app offers a dashboard that displays the on-time performance of trains at the division, zone, and national levels. It uses data from the existing control systems and integrates with the GPS-based tracking system installed on locomotives. According to a senior railway official, the app will help in identifying bottlenecks and improving time management.
"The app will empower field staff and supervisors with real-time data to enhance punctuality," the official said. The application is currently being used by senior officials and is expected to be rolled out to all stations gradually.
Impact on Operations
The launch comes as part of Indian Railways' ongoing digital transformation efforts. The app is expected to reduce delays by enabling quicker response to disruptions. It also generates reports on punctuality trends, which can be used for long-term planning. In the first week of its launch, the app has already recorded an improvement in data accuracy for train running information.
Indian Railways operates over 13,000 passenger trains daily, and punctuality has been a persistent challenge. The new app aims to address this by providing a centralized platform for monitoring. The system also alerts officials when a train is running late beyond a predefined threshold, ensuring immediate attention.
Future Plans
Indian Railways plans to integrate the app with passenger-facing platforms like the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) in the future. This will allow passengers to access more accurate and timely information about train delays. The railway ministry has emphasized that the app is part of a broader strategy to leverage technology for operational efficiency.
"We are committed to using innovation to improve services. Punctuality BZA is a step towards that goal," a ministry spokesperson stated. The app is currently available only for internal use, but its data will eventually feed into public information systems.
