SpaceX Launches Maiden Bond Offering to Fund AI Ambitions

SpaceX Enters Bond Market for First Time

SpaceX, the rocket and AI company led by Elon Musk, has launched its maiden offering of senior unsecured notes, according to a Reuters report. The newly-listed company is seeking additional funds to power its artificial intelligence ambitions. Reports suggest the bond offering could amount to as much as USD 20 billion.

In a disclosure accompanying the offering, SpaceX revealed it holds cash and cash equivalents worth USD 100.8 billion. The company's shares debuted on Nasdaq on June 12 at an issue price of USD 135, quickly gaining traction as investors piled in to participate in Musk's massive AI plans.

Funds to Refinance xAI Merger Loan

An earlier Reuters report indicated that the proceeds from the bond offering could be used to refinance a loan taken earlier this year after the merger of Musk's AI company xAI with SpaceX in February. This merger consolidated Musk's AI ventures under the SpaceX umbrella.

SpaceX, valued at over USD 2 trillion, is one of the most valuable US companies. It briefly surpassed Amazon and Microsoft in market capitalization in the first few days of trading due to intense buyer interest. However, shares have pared some gains in recent sessions as initial enthusiasm tempers and investors assess the company's stratospheric valuations.

Intense Competition in AI Buildout

Musk, who has been vocal about his spectacular AI ambitions, faces tough competition from rivals. The AI buildout is seeing massive capital spending by Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft. The race for compute power is cash-intensive, with capital spending potentially running into trillions of dollars in the coming years.

SpaceX has plans to take the data center fight to space, aiming to build orbital compute capacities that harness solar energy for massive power demand. Shortly after listing, the company made a big AI bet by acquiring Cursor for USD 60 billion in an all-stock deal. Cursor shot to fame with its coding tool that allows software developers to generate, edit, and review code.

Vertical Integration in AI Stack

The Cursor acquisition adds another layer to SpaceX's AI capabilities as it vertically integrates to strengthen its presence across the entire AI stack. This move positions SpaceX to compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
