Chennai: Energy Minister Announces Major Reforms in Tamil Nadu Electricity Sector

Energy Resources Minister R Nirmalkumar announced on [date] that the state government will implement comprehensive reforms in the electricity sector within one year. The primary objectives are to improve operational efficiency and significantly reduce financial losses that have plagued the sector for years.

Corrective Measures Initiated

The minister stated that several corrective measures have already been initiated to eliminate irregularities. "Tenders awarded during the previous regime are being reviewed," he said, adding that new transparent tender procedures will be introduced through a digital portal system. Separate committees have been formed across various wings of the electricity department to oversee the reform process.

Ending Irregularities in Contract Awards

Nirmalkumar pointed out that contracts in the past were awarded to select individuals and firms, a practice that will not continue. "Equal opportunity will be provided to all eligible firms. There will be no place for middlemen or irregularities," he emphasized. The government aims to ensure fair competition and transparency in all future contract awards.

Reviving the Debt-Ridden Sector

The minister revealed that the government is also striving to revive the electricity sector, which currently has a debt of around Rs 2.5 lakh crore. The goal is to transform it into a profitable organization. Irregularities in contracts related to electricity infrastructure work, including pole-related projects, have been identified. Going forward, contracts will be awarded only to qualified and capable firms, and timely payments will be ensured for companies completing works.

These reforms are expected to bring about a significant transformation in Tamil Nadu's electricity sector, benefiting consumers and the state economy alike.
