WhatsApp Launches Global Username Reservations to Boost Privacy
WhatsApp Launches Global Username Reservations for Privacy

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform, has begun rolling out username reservations globally, allowing users to connect without disclosing their phone numbers. The feature, announced on Monday, lets users create and reserve a unique username before it becomes fully accessible within the app later this year.

Qualified users will receive an in-app notification when username reservations are available for their accounts, according to the company.

Privacy-First Communication

The introduction of usernames represents one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy updates in recent years. Instead of sharing a personal mobile number, users can now provide a unique WhatsApp username to connect with friends, family, businesses, and communities.

WhatsApp clarified that usernames are not social media handles but rather privacy mechanisms. “You can communicate with someone on WhatsApp without disclosing your phone number by using a username. It doesn’t have to match your handle on any other app; you can select your own,” the company stated.

No Public Search Directory

Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp’s username system is designed with privacy at its core. There will be no public directory of usernames, no searchable database, no username suggestions, and no public profile discovery. To contact someone, users must already know the exact username of the person they wish to message.

This approach significantly reduces unsolicited contact and safeguards user identities, WhatsApp emphasized.

Usernames Can Be Changed Anytime

Users will be able to edit or change their usernames directly within the app at any time. WhatsApp noted that usernames are primarily intended for privacy, so users can select unique identifiers that do not necessarily match their handles on other social media platforms. The company reaffirmed that phone numbers remain secure and that usernames are an alternative way to initiate conversations.

Part of WhatsApp’s Privacy Roadmap

The username feature aligns with Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance privacy across its communication services. In recent years, WhatsApp has introduced several privacy-focused features, including end-to-end encrypted messaging, chat lock, secret code protection, screen sharing privacy, improved spam defense, privacy check tools, and advanced account security options.

The addition of usernames further solidifies WhatsApp’s position as a privacy-centric communication service, the company said.
