Iran-Israel Conflict May Spike CNG, Industrial Gas Prices in Madhya Pradesh

Indore: The ongoing military conflict between Iran and Israel is poised to trigger significant price increases for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) used in vehicles and Industrial Natural Gas (ING) across Madhya Pradesh, while domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supplies are expected to remain largely unaffected. This assessment comes from Aavantika Gas Limited, the primary gas distributor for several cities in the state.

Supply Chain Pressure and Price Volatility

Manish Verma, Marketing Head at Aavantika Gas Limited, confirmed that global gas market prices have surged sharply due to the war situation, placing considerable cost pressure on city-level distributors. "The procurement rates for gas have increased significantly because of the ongoing conflict. We are striving to maintain consumer prices at the lowest possible levels, but the cost burden is substantial," Verma stated.

He elaborated that a major portion of industrial and commercial gas originates from the war-affected Middle East region, making future price predictions challenging for this segment. "Upstream suppliers have invoked a 'force majeure' clause, which excuses them from penalties due to unforeseen circumstances, but they assure uninterrupted gas supply," Verma explained.

Differential Impact on Gas Segments

Verma emphasized that domestic PNG supply continuity will be maintained with minimal disruption. However, CNG for vehicles and ING for industries face imminent pricing pressure. "Changes in prices may occur depending on how the war situation evolves. The scenario remains fluid, and any major escalation could further influence supply costs and pricing in the coming days," he added.

The company commits to sustaining uninterrupted gas supply to cities under its jurisdiction, including Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, Pithampur, and connecting highways. Verma noted that supply would be prioritized, with potential cuts first affecting domestic PNG, industrial, and commercial consumers who have long-standing outstanding bills with Aavantika Gas.

Current Ground Situation in Indore

As of now, CNG stations across Indore are operating normally without visible long queues. Nevertheless, vehicle owners are exhibiting heightened caution amid concerns over possible supply disruptions. CNG supplied by Aavantika Gas Limited is extensively utilized by auto-rickshaw drivers, cab operators, and private vehicle owners in the region.

Operators at multiple stations reported steady supply, though a slight uptick in demand has been observed as motorists opt for early refills. "I filled my car today without any issue. There was no long queue, but discussions at the station centered on potential supply impacts. Consequently, many are refilling earlier than usual," shared Rohit Sharma, a resident of Vijay Nagar.

Heightened Alert Among Daily Commuters

Auto-rickshaw drivers, whose livelihoods depend on CNG, are particularly vigilant. "Currently, supply is smooth and queues are normal. But any future shortage would directly impact our work. Hence, I am refilling whenever possible," said auto-rickshaw driver Irfan Khan.

Another commuter, Sunita Jain, refilling her vehicle at a city CNG station, described the prevailing mood as cautious rather than panicked. "There is no rush at pumps yet. Still, people are not taking chances and are topping up their tanks. Everyone aims to avoid being stranded if supply slows down," she remarked.

The situation underscores how geopolitical tensions in the Middle East can reverberate through local economies, affecting essential commodities like fuel. Stakeholders in Madhya Pradesh are closely monitoring developments, with Aavantika Gas Limited balancing cost pressures against consumer affordability while ensuring supply reliability.
