Ahmedabad Gains Higher HRA Tax Exemption Status from April 1
Ahmedabad Gets Higher HRA Tax Break from New Financial Year

Ahmedabad Elevated to Metro Status for HRA Tax Exemption

In a significant development for salaried professionals, Ahmedabad will be included among cities eligible for an enhanced House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption starting from the new financial year on April 1. This change provides a larger tax break for employees under the old tax regime, aligning the city with major metropolitan areas.

Revised Tax Rules Boost Exemption Limits

Under the updated income tax regulations, employees residing in Ahmedabad can now claim an HRA exemption of up to 50% of their salary for calculation purposes. This marks a substantial increase from the previous 40% limit, when the city was categorized as a non-metro. With this revision, Ahmedabad now stands alongside established metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune for HRA-related benefits.

Expected Benefits for Key Sectors

The adjustment is anticipated to positively impact a segment of Ahmedabad's salaried workforce, particularly those employed in dynamic sectors including:

Tax experts highlight that this move could significantly enhance tax efficiency for individuals who continue to opt for the old tax regime and receive HRA as part of their compensation package. However, it is crucial to note that the exemption remains contingent upon actual rent payments and proper documentation.

Expert Insights on the Impact

Jainik Vakil, chairman of the direct tax committee at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), emphasized the relief this brings: "The higher HRA exemption is a major relief for Ahmedabad-based employees as rental costs in many areas have risen sharply."

Chartered accountant Karim Lakhani provided additional context, noting that while the revised rule increases the upper limit, the final exemption will still depend on salary structure and rent paid. He pointed out that higher-income employees are likely to benefit the most from this change.

Conditions and Considerations

Employees must ensure they meet specific criteria to avail of the enhanced exemption:

  1. Actual payment of rent with valid receipts.
  2. Adherence to the old tax regime provisions.
  3. Proper documentation to support claims.

This development underscores the government's efforts to adjust tax policies in response to urban economic shifts, offering tangible benefits to professionals in growing cities like Ahmedabad.
